PETALING JAYA: A nationwide operation is under way to ensure that
retailers and traders comply with the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Customs GST director Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy said some 4,000 personnel
from the department and Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Ministry
are involved.
The aim is to ensure retailers are implementing the new tax regime and issuing receipts.
"So far there's been no disruption and consumers whom we spoke to accept
the tax," he said during an inspection at a mall in Puchong.
He said there been some cases where traders could not activate their systems in time and could not charge GST or issue receipts.
"This is only the first day and we are being flexible by only giving advice," he said.
Subromaniam said traders who do not comply with the tax from Thursday
will be issued notices and action taken based on their explanations.
On the whole, Subromaniam said he was satisfied with the level of compliance of the tax.
